The 2024 YALS Annual Conference theme is “Get Connected” – inspiring us to connect to teens, to our communities, to each other as well as other library staff, and to ourselves.
The conference will host several speakers on topics relating to our theme "Get Connected", networking opportunities, and a keynote presentation by YA author Sara Farizan followed by a book signing!
Sara Farizan (she/her) watches '90s cartoons and '80s commercials to relax, and loves pinball but is wary of certain games.
She is the award-winning and critically acclaimed author of the young adult novels Here to Stay, Tell Me Again How a Crush Should Feel, and the Lambda Literay award winning If You Could Be Mine, which was named one of TIME magazine's 100 Best YA Books of All Time.
Her upcoming novel Dead Flip is her favorite book she's written. She has short stories in the anthologies Fresk Ink, All Out, The Radical Element, Hungry Hearts, Come On In, and Fools in Love. She also had a dream come true in writing the DC Comics middle-grade graphic novel, My Buddy, Killer Croc.
She lives in Massachusetts and thanks you for reading her work.

Library Management or “What I Wish I Already Knew on My First Day of Work at a Library!”
This class will address topics including budgeting, fundraising, physical plant management, policy development, staff hiring, supervision and training, and volunteer supervision. In addition, subjects such as board governance, intellectual freedom, leadership, and privacy will be incorporated into the training. Since any one of these topics could be their own two-hour presentation, the goal of this class is to offer an introduction that will allow participants to become better equipped to ask questions of how each of these topics are handled in their own library. Mindy and Brittany will speak about these topics and themes from their own perspectives and offer insight into how they worked together to support each other in their respective roles.
Mindy Atwood is the Assistant State Librarian for the New Hampshire State Library. Prior to the State Library, Mindy worked as a New Hampshire public library director for more than twelve years at the Abbott Library in Sunapee, NH and the Salisbury Free Library in Salisbury, NH. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Middlebury College as well as a Master’s Degree in Library Science from Clarion University. In 2019, Mindy attended the New England Library Leadership Symposium at Rolling Ridge. I CAN'T SELF CARE MY WAY OUT OF THIS!
Morning Session with Cassie Gillespie
Moving beyond self-care to address workplace trauma exposure at the organizational level. In this session Cassie will introduce foundational concepts and a frame for thinking about chronic stress (and what we can do about it) in the workplace. Chronic stress & secondary trauma exposure in the workplace are insidious problems that can lead to burnout, low morale, poor health, staff turnover, and diminished outcomes. All too often organizations do not address chronic stress, or only address it through the lens of self-care. This session will focus heavily on the importance of collective care strategies and is intended for all library staff.
Weather the Storm: Balancing Self-Care & Selflessness
Afternoon Session with Ty Gagne
So many of us have hosted Ty at our libraries as the author of the books; The Last Traverse: Tragedy and Resilience in the Winter Whites and Where You’ll Find Me: Risk, Decisions, and the Last Climb of Kate Matrosova. (Exciting news, he is currently working completing another book).
He is also the Chief Executive Officer of Primex3, has held executive positions in the municipal, non-profit, and healthcare sectors. He has designed this program to fit the theme of this conference.
She was an experienced hiker. She knew that the tracks ahead meant someone was in trouble. But little did she know they would lead to a rescue mission that has since become legendary. Weather the Storm is a real-life account of one hiker’s selfless act of courage and compassion, which sets the stage for an immersive and reflective session highlighting the critical importance of self-care while in the service of others. By the end of this session participants/attendees will leave with practical insights that can be applied in their personal and professional lives.

This highly interactive workshop will help you de-bias yourself and show you how to embrace diverse people and ideas.
