WEEDING WORKSHOP AT Merrimack Public Library

This workshop will examine best practice approaches to weeding and developing strong collections. Practical hands-on examples, best practices, and tools and resources will be shared. This class will be offered in person and virtually.

Yvette Couser is the Director of the Merrimack Public Library and holds an MLS from Indiana State University. Yvette is a former NHLA Board President and has been a member of the Paralibrarian’s Section, the EDI Committee, the Bylaws Committee and is currently serving as the NHLA Website Coordinator. Yvette is the current President of the GMILCS Library Consortium, of which Merrimack is a founding member. Yvette tries to encourage and promote a variety of professional development to keep up with changing service and knowledge needs for the staff. She is overseeing a deep weed of Merrimack’s Adult nonfiction collection in preparation for a diversity audit and a proposal to ditch Dewey library-wide.

Cathy Walter has been the Head of Youth Services at the Merrimack Public Library since the fall of 2019. Her first project was to spend the pandemic years diving deep into all things equity. She has attended classes through ACRL, the ALA ("Lessons in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion from Public Libraries: Managing Change from Where You Are"), Dartmouth-Hitchcock ("Extension for Community Health Outcomes: Teen Mental Health"), and LJ &SLJ ("Equity in Action: Fostering an Antiracist Library Culture"). Her next project is to ditch Dewey and move children's collections into a more EDI-conscious shelving scheme.

Please note there will be 3 weeding classes offered in fall 2023; Meredith, Peterborough and Merrimack. These are NOT a series. Pick the class most convenient to you.
