FUNDAMENTALS OF CATALOGING AND CLASSIFICATION
Do you see Cataloging & Classification as a daunting, mysterious process? Let Linda Kepner help you transform it into an intriguing brain exercise by showing you the history and fundamentals of this “very librarian” skill. Hands-on worksheets are based on the Sears List of Subject Headings and the Dewey Decimal Classification system – bring any edition (DDC Abridged or Unabridged) that you have, the newer the better.
Linda Tiernan Kepner has been a medical librarian and a high school librarian, and now is cataloguer at Peterborough Town Library.

Join James McKim, the presenter for this workshop. We hear and use terms like “diversity”, “equity”, and “inclusion” quite frequently. But most people never stop to understand what those terms really mean.
Discover the key concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) that are the foundation for improving individual and organizational performance. Discover why individuals unintentionally discriminate (“isms”), how discrimination manifests in interpersonal relationships, and why it is beneficial to include diverse people and thoughts in your daily life.
Learning Objectives
· Describe what diversity, equity, and inclusion mean
· Describe the difference between race and ethnicity/culture
· Describe why diversity is nothing without equity and inclusion
· Begin to analyze the “welcomeness” of your workplace for diverse employees.
This workshop is sponsored by the EDI Committee and is for NHLA members only.
BOOK REPAIR WORKSHOP/BEGINNERS LEVEL
Book repair seems as though it should be as simple as a roll of tape and 30 seconds to spare at the desk, though all of us know from experience this is not the case. Repairing, mending and assessing damaged materials is a process that requires an understanding not only of book structure and function, but also where your institution's priorities are in terms of budget and use of staff time. Learn how books best function, what can be fixed and what can't, the tools of the trade and how to take a wider look at the process to make the best choices possible for your collection.
Presenter: Nik Beauchemin attended the North Bennet Street School full time Bookbinding program and successfully graduated in 2016. They began working at the Peterborough Town Library in 2019, and have been facilitating repairs and maintaining the collection ever since. In between library repairs, they love to make marbled and paste papers, hand bound journals and fine leather bindings as well as partaking in a variety of fiber arts.
This workshop is limited to 15 people in person.
This presentation is sponsored by the NHLA Paralibrarian Section and is open to members and non-members.
